The project was launched in Europe in 1991; Bulgaria joined it in 1999 on the initiative of the BNC of ICOMOS and with the approval of the Ministry of Culture. The European Days of Heritage take place every year in September on the territory of the whole country. The aim is to promote cultural heritage, to associate a huge community to the values of heritage and to identify new resources for heritage preservation and use.

The following themes were developed so far: “Vernacular architecture” (1999); “Cultural routes” (2000); “The children, youth and heritage” (2001); “Different ethnical groups and religions – common heritage” (2002); “Cultural landscapes” (2003); “Cultural tourism” (2004); „South-Eastern Europe, shared heritage” (2005) and „Heritage in modern information society” (2006). Different events related to cultural heritage were organized during the Days: competitions, expositions, performances, concerts, cultural routes, inauguration of rehabilitated monuments of culture, promotions on the net, presence in the media etc; all the events allow the promotion of the Bulgarian cultural heritage as the base for development of domestic and international tourism.   The Bulgarian participation in the EHD was positively appraised by the Council of Europe.
